How’d your favourite SA breweries do at the Australian International Beer Awards?
Gone are the days in which the feathers in South Australia’s beverage industry cap come solely from our globally renowned wine industry.
After years building up a roster of local distillers, SA gin is having its moment, and similarly for our indie and craft beer community: there are brewers who started in sheds at home or by borrowing other people’s equipment who have now either upscaled (once or twice) or built an official home for their business.

CityMag‘s rundown of SA breweries is ordered from most awards to least, and alphabetical for tied breweries.
Most importantly for conscientious consumers, this means plenty of quality booze in the local market. But while we’re lucky enough just to be able to drink and talk about our favourite South Australian brews, it’s always nice to get an idea of how we’re sitting in the national scene.
The Australian International Beer Awards have been held since 1992 as a dual project from the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria and the University of Ballarat, with an award ceremony held for the 2019 event on Thursday, 16 May at Good Beer Week in Melbourne.
The AIBA saw 2594 beers submitted by 402 breweries from 26 different countries this year, and from that pool, 20 South Australian breweries took home 89 awards.
