CityMag met six of our favourite South Australian OzAsia Festival Stage performers ahead of the annual Lucky Dumpling Market in Elder Park.

With over 20 food stalls – including players like Ong Vietnamese, The Thai Guy and Shibui – the Lucky Dumpling Market is back in Elder Park this year for its eighth season.

There will be free live entertainment including music and DJs with a range of local, national and international performers, while punters enjoy some quality dumplings and other goodies.

Out of 110 performances throughout the two-and-a-half weeks, 93 are locals. 

We got to know some of the South Australians who are set to take the OzAsia Festival Stage at the Lucky Dumpling Market. 

Catch them at Elder Park from Thursday, October 24 until Sunday, November 10.

What’s your favorite way to consume music and why?
I like listening to albums in their entirety – the album’s format as a cohesive work is an art form in itself. It lets us peer into the artistry and intention.

I like asking people for personal music recommendations. Algorithms feed us more and more of the same types of music but human recommendations surprise and challenge us and stretch our palate.

What’s the genre of music you play?
Chinese-Australian Hip-Hop.

I call it that because I am a second-generation Chinese-Australian and I make hip-hop. It’s that simple. Musically, I produce my own beats and make hip-hop influenced by jazz, ethnic and cultural sounds, but I also like experimenting with wonky and dissonant sounds like artists such as Flying Lotus and Tokimonsta.

What are you most looking forward to about the OzAsia Lucky Dumpling Market music showcase?
It’s the chill vibe. Especially when the sunset golden hour glow hits Elder Park and you’re enjoying incredible food while hearing good music by the river *chef’s kiss*.

I’ve discovered artists like Hyoshi in Counterpoint and Big Bao through the Lucky Dumpling Market – it’s a great way to find underground gems.

Of course, as a hip-hop artist, I’m really looking forward to L-Fresh at the closing night party.

What atmosphere will you create during your set?
I’m so excited to be performing my new rap album FOR THE LAST TIME in its entirety which came out just this month and has been getting really great buzz .

Fans from my WOMADelaide show will recognise the energy I bring. Prepare for nostalgic vibes, jazz explorations, ultra-unique beats and unusual sonic textures. I do things in my own way. We’ll have a fun time together.

Angela Schilling of Big Bao

What’s your favorite way to consume music and why?
My favourite way to listen to music is in the club: loud, dark and sweaty with my friends, or even just with strangers.

You have the opportunity to really let it take you over, have a shared experience with others around you, and there really isn’t any space for worrying or thinking about what you have to do tomorrow. It brings out lots of feelings and I love feelings.

What’s the genre of music you play?
As DJ Cookie, I play many different genres of music, but my favourite and probably most commonly played is bass music. UK funky, garage, two-step, breaks, dub, dance – anything that you can feel in your whole body.

What atmosphere will you create during your set?
Bibbezee and I are going to play a back-to-back set with a dancey and energetic vibe – something happy and sunny for eating and being with family and friends.

What other artists inspire your sound or performance style?
All my friends who make and play music – especially those who champion dancing together as a community.

My fellow Big Bao’s SmallFry and Yeo, as well as Tiger Club from Adelaide. These DJs help me constantly understand the power of true connection through music.

Koleh

What’s your favorite way to consume music and why?
Through great speakers, really loud, and with enough space to have a dance.

What’s the genre of music you play?
Asian dream pop.

What atmosphere will you create during your set?
I hope to create a dreamy rainforest atmosphere.

What is your favourite Lucky Dumpling Market food stall and why?
Jalan Jalan was my favourite stall last year. The pisang goreng (fried banana) gives me wings.

What other artists inspire your sound or performance style?
Mojave 3, Mazzy Star, Arthur Russell and Dayak musicians playing traditional Sape (a traditional lute from Borneo which you can hear in my music) folk songs.

Vinyl or streaming? Honestly, high-quality downloads are my style (because I’m a nerd)

What’s your favourite way to consume music and why?
My favourite way to consume music is to let Spotify play while I’m going for a walk or driving. I love listening to albums in full so I can really take in the artist’s story/piece of art.

What are you most looking forward to about the OzAsia Lucky Dumpling Market music showcase?
This will be my seventh time playing at the OzAsia Lucky Dumpling Market music showcase and I am so excited to be bringing my band with me for the first time this year. I’ll be sharing so many new original songs as well.

What is your favourite Lucky Dumpling Market food stall and why?
I’d have to say Shibui for dessert. Their mochi doughnuts with soft serve are so delicious.

What other artists inspire your sound or performance style?
I love so many artists but have been recently inspired by Laufey, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande and SZA. I’m very much into a mix of pop, RnB and jazzy goodness.

Gene Phoa

What’s your favourite way to consume music and why?
Nighttime, lights out, headphones in, lying down and listening. I find that blocking out all the other senses allows me to really be immersed in the music and pick out all the different parts.

What’s the genre of music you play?
My music is mainly indie pop rock with some dreamy alternative flavours.

What atmosphere will you create during your set?
Fresh, upbeat, dreamy, heartfelt, nostalgic. Basically, a summer love kind of atmosphere.

What other artists inspire your sound or performance style?
I’m a big fan of indie/alt-pop rock acts like the Middle Kids, Arctic Monkeys and The Kooks.

Jennifer Trijo

What’s the genre of music you play?
I’ve studied a variety of genres, so as a musician I play many styles and many instruments.

However, for my live show at OzAsia in November, I will be playing my latest original music which is a blend of pop, folk, RnB, and spoken word.

What are you most looking forward to about the OzAsia Lucky Dumpling Market music showcase?
I love the good vibes at the Lucky Dumpling Market and I’m most looking forward to sharing my original songs with people at twilight by the river.

I’m so grateful to be in Kaurna Yerta sharing my songs and stories alongside a stellar lineup of Asian-Australian artists.

What is your favourite Lucky Dumpling Market food stall and why?
The Filipino Project simply because they cook the cuisine of my motherland – the Philippines. I particularly love eating ube ice cream.

Second to that, I love any stall that sells great dumplings and there’s no shortage of that at the Lucky Dumpling Market.

What other artists inspire your sound or performance style?
The artists that inspire my songwriting and composition are Sting, Alicia Keys, Joni Mitchell, KT Tunstall, Delta Goodrem, Glen Hansard, Markéta Irglová, Alan Menken, Frank Wildhorn and Ennio Morricone.

I listen to a wide range of music from contemporary, classical to music theatre. I’m always learning.
