What to wear on a long haul flight

The biggest difference between travelling for business and travelling for pleasure is the tax-deductible nature of the former. However, travelling from Adelaide to New York or London for any reason requires a pretty thorough business plan for survival.

Strictly Business

Whether you fly east or west out of Adelaide, spending more than eight hours, stationary, on a plane is a special kind of hell we can only hope will sharpen your deal negotiating skills to a will-not-take-no-for-an-answer point. Keep stylish mid-air with our sartorial selection and remember your travel wardrobe is a total tax write off.

Luggage is a special kind of affectation for the business traveller, demonstrating your frequent flier miles well in advance of your welcome at the Qantas Club Lounge. Further, it’s a fact only tourists and backpackers hang out at baggage claim, so glide effortlessly past them with your 21” carry-on Globe-Trotter Trolley Case and The Seville laptop tote from Lo & Sons.

Keep the space between your ears calm like a blue ocean by setting up a strong perimeter defence. Cancel all the audible anguish of the aeroplane around you by investing in the QuietComfort 35 wireless headphones by Bose.

The passport of a business traveller is their suit (and their actual passport, of course). Gender, we’d stress, matters less than the material and fit of this very important document, which welcomes investment and wards off time-wasters. We’d recommend a Kangaroo Island wool suit from Japanese brand, United Arrows. Stepping off the plane in a carefully crafted Japanese suit will immediately challenge any small-town misconceptions your big city contacts may have had.

Another essential decision is what your feet should feature as they shuffle on and off the plane. Taking the sophisticated-but-slouchy idea to its logical conclusion, we’d highly recommend perusing ASOS’ huge selection of slip-on loafers. No laces means no worries as over-zealous security agents require you to pass your weapons of mass seduction through the x-ray machine.

Long-haul leisure

There’s a sickening cliché that says life is not about the destination, it’s about the journey. But leisure travel proves that this is absolutely incorrect. Take our advice to help you survive the journey so you can fully embrace your holiday destination.

Ideally, you’ll sleep your way through your long haul flight, so, ideally, you’ll be wearing pyjamas.

This pyjama-inspired Dries Van Noten shirt will act like a sartorial cushion protecting you against that whole sleeping-in-a-public-space-situation.

For when the cabin gets a little cool, layer on the classic v-neck pullover you bought yourself at the new Levi’s Rundle Mall store.

We’re not really sure how to define these Ginia RTW Cara Pants, except that they’re a unique in-between. They’re relaxed-fitting enough (thank you light weight crepe) to feel like trackies, but stylish enough to look like pants. Buy them via South Australian-based online store, Love Twain.

Designed and made in Adelaide, BB Shoemaker’s veg tanned mules are easy to kick off when the idea of curling up into a yoga-inspired sleeping position begins to seem like a smart move.

Big enough to fit all of your favourite magazines (a CityMag included, we hope), and small enough to take as your carry-on luggage – this Leatherworks Adelaide duffle is a piece of Adelaide we’re proud to show off overseas.

For all the flyers

We’re not sure why, but the time in the flight when you’re desperately trying to sleep while sitting upright next to a bunch of strangers is the same time your airline chooses to crank up the aircon. Keep the draft off your ankles and desperately hold on to being cheerful with a pair of whimsical Chup socks from the West End’s RHD.
