What we're making to drink on these balmy summer evenings (and yes, sometimes on summer afternoons. And only very occasionally in the mornings), while we're playing cards.
Summer drinks list
Caffè corretto
When: Either to start or end your drinking session
Why: Because caffeine and booze is a good idea, even when it’s not
How: Extract a shot of espresso (we’re presuming you have a coffee machine at home. What do you mean you don’t? Or grab one from the friendly café on the corner), and add a splash of grappa – the amount is at your discretion. We use Antica Distilleria Quaglia Grappa Classica.
Limoncello lemonade
When: To ease out of your hangover
Why: For a zesty, refreshing, but gentle good time
How: Pour 45ml of Limoncello over ice, and top up with Sanpellegrino Limonata. Garnish with fresh or dehydrated lemon. Drink. Repeat – several times.
Giovanni Armani Giorgio wines
When: You decide to eat some food, these wines will sit nicely alongside them
Why: Because, apparently, you can’t drink spirits all day
How: Chill, or don’t, place in glass and consume liberally (until you imitate the action of the bottle of rosato in this gif).
Aperol Spritz
When: On Christmas morning, with a croissant and fresh berry salad
Why: Because life is worth living
How: Mix two parts Aperol with three parts Prosecco over ice, then top with Sanpellegrino sparkling water and garnish with a slice of fresh orange.
Campari & Soda
When: It’s too early for a negroni
Why: You’re not actually sitting, enjoying the Summer sun, unless you have a Campari in hand
How: Pour a measure (30ml or 45ml, depending on your level of need and tolerance) of Campari over ice, stir, and then top with Sanpellegrino sparkling water and garnish with a citrus of some kind. Try not to drink it embarrassingly quickly.
Negroni
When: You’re ready to get boozy. Also, anytime, all the time. Campari forever.
Why: Because it’s the best drink of all time
How: Combine equal parts of Campari, Melbourne Gin Company gin, and Margan Off Sweet Vermouth over ice. Stir, and then top with fresh ice and a citrus garnish. Realise your life is complete.
