The event, which debuted in January 2019 and made its second appearance in November 2019, was put on pause during the pandemic, like many other music festivals.
During this time off, Pivot operations manager Elliott Jamie realised the community-building power of festivals, and so he always knew Sidebyside would make a comeback.
“If our experience of the last three years taught us anything, it’s that the companionship, community and collective happiness that is offered on a dance floor, where all of the elements are just right, is irreplaceable,” Elliott says.
“It is something that provides such a unique feeling, and not having it as a part of our existence was tough to bear. It wouldn’t have felt right for us to pursue other pathways without another edition of Sidebyside in 2022.”
This year, Sidebyside will host a total of 23 local, national and international DJs and producers, making up what will be the festival’s most expansive lineup to date.
The bill features an eclectic mix of electronic music, ranging from ambient and downtempo to house, disco and breaks.
Local DJ Eluize will grace the stage alongside other Australian artists Luke Alessi (Mel), Adi Toohey (Syd), Harvey Sutherland (Mel), Close Counters (Mel) and Merve (Syd), and international acts Tiga (Canada) and Josh Butler (UK).
Rounding out the rest of the bill are homegrown Adelaide acts Andre 3K, Claude & Burden, Felicity, Fishermen’s Friend, Jamie’s Kitchen, J.Hennessy, Late Nite Lenny, Milkpaste, Phil 4 Real, Pierre Honey, Sleezy, Theodore & Harry Prider, and Wallace & Malone.
In Sidebyside’s second edition in 2019, the team upgraded from a single to a twin stage event. This year, the day party will move to a three-stage offering at Tampawardli Ellis Park, one of which will be entirely devoted to local artists.
“We felt that after three years off it was important to support artists based here in 2022,” a Sidebyside spokesperson says.
“It is a priority for us to support Adelaide’s dance music community and provide a platform for established and up-and-coming local talent to perform. To this end, we’ve also added a third stage to feature an exclusively South Australian-based lineup.”
Sidebyside’s stage and site production are a collaboration between Pivot and South Australian company Mapped Design, which has produced features at Womad and Illuminate.
Together, Pivot and Mapped will produce interactive visual installations which will complement the natural surroundings of the Adelaide Park Lands.
Food will be available throughout the day from local eateries Let Them Eat and Pan & Vine.
A variety of beers, wines, spirits, cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages will also be on offer at bars across the festival site.
Tickets are available from Sidebyside’s website.
