Designer Isabelle Byrne curates the event, reaching into her network of creative fringe to pull together the showcase.
“All the artists are friends of friends,” Isabelle says. “So some of my friends helped me put together a list of artists and I approached them just to see if they would be interested.”
Some of the local talent making an appearance include textile artist Jason van Hamburg, jewellery maker Lilly Buttrose and potter Ayesha Aggarwal.
Many of the craftspeople involved will be showing off new pieces or works exclusive to this market, including Jason, who is working on some previously unfinished projects for the event.
“I used this as an opportunity to look through my clothing archives and look at my prototypes, it’s going to be my largest offering of clothes,” he explains.
Although she curated the event, Isabelle says the idea for Friends of Friends came from the owners of in. Studio + Café, Elena Vereker and Devin Skrade, who were interested in hosting a market in the café’s studio space.
Isabelle saw Friends of Friends as a chance to highlight types of art and craft uncommon in other markets, such as pottery and glassware.
“I’ve been to some [markets] and they’re often a different genre, and only some of them are quite crafty,” she says.
Friends of Friends will also serve as a way for the local artisan community to connect with each other.
“I’m excited to get better acquainted with people, meet new people coming to the market, and I’m just glad to be a part of what feels like a nice community,” Jason says.
As the name implies, Isabelle sees this event as a way to bring local artists closer together.
“It’s also about me making a list of possible artists that I can showcase with my friends and their friends,” she says.
Friends of Friends Market will take place on 12 November from 11am ’til 4pm at 268 Pirie Street
