CityMag is examining the new frontier of the tattoo industry by visiting Adelaide's best independent, artist-driven small businesses - like House of Daggers.
Adelaide ink: House of Daggers Tattoo Collective
Established: 2015
Number of artists: Three
Style: Large scale / traditional
Simone-Clare Hede (@simone_clare_tattoo), Jamie Brockenbrow (@jamieangustattooer) and Stu Pagdin (@stupagdintattooer) had been working together for a good couple of years before starting up their own studio in House of Daggers.
The three work in distinctive styles which are heavily influenced by traditional aesthetics, but their approach – which involves working with clients closely on a design – is progressive.
House of Daggers regularly hosts international and interstate guests artists and happily send clients to other studios if they want a style other than those in which Jamie, Stu and Simone specialise.
They say they’re happy to do so because, “the younger generation of tattooers want to have a community” not just a business. The trio have recently added a tattoo removal arm to the business to make the process of executing cover-up tattoos easier.
Generational change has revolutionised the business of tattoos, which no longer exists on the edges of society. Instead, artists are being appreciated for their craft and creativity and SA is developing a nationally respected niche industry.
