Program
This year’s line-up runs the gamut of dramas and comedies to true stories.
In her first feature length film, Pretty Red Dress, writer-director Dionne Edward (We Love Moses) engages with notions of masculinity, self-discovery and gender expression with touching honesty and insight against a soundtrack featuring the music of Tina Turner. Look out for the screening on Thursday, 9 November, a Pretty Queer Event.
Documentaries include Mark Cousin’s My Name Is Alfred Hitchcock, which weaves footage from virtually every Hitchcock film ever made, and Anton Corbijn’s Squaring the Circle – The Story of Hipgnosis, a profile of the album art studio behind some of the most recognisable album covers of all time.
Films having their Australian premieres include Ken Loach’s The Old Oak and One Life, starring Sir Anthony Hopkins, Lena Olin and Romola Garai, which opens the festival.
There’s also a retrospective film selection celebrating six British ‘leading ladies’ – including Helen Mirren in Caligula – The Ultimate Cut, a reoffering of the notorious original that, incredibly, includes not a single shot from the first. See it for the first time. Or again.
