Sabai Cafe with Elaine Cheng

Elaine Cheng and her watercolours head to the seaside for this edition of Famished Fridays, andcome across a family-run cafe that serves a mix of brunch favourites and authentic thai dishes.

  • Words and illustrations: Elaine Cheng

In a market dominated by so many Asian restaurants that have compromised their ingredients and techniques to suit Western taste buds, Sabai Cafe’s Yai and her family manage to whip up dishes that have won the hearts of the locals and still remain true to their heritage.

Remarks

To see more of Elaine’s illustration and read more of her articles visit her blog – Fill Me In.

You can visit Sabai Cafe at 105 Partridge St, Glenelg South on Mondays and Tuesdays from 8am – 4pm, from Wednesday to Saturday from 8am – 8.30pm and in Sundays from 9am – 4pm. The full thai menu is available at dinner from Wednesday to Saturday, and at other times there is a brunch menu and limited thai options.

While you’re there, Elaine recommends you try the Curry puffs, Pad Thai, Curry prawns (Yai’s Favourite), Choo Chee Fish (Angela’s Favourite), Phla Pla (Peter’s Favourite) and Basil chicken mince.

That takes skill, finesse, and a strong conviction. I can’t recommend this place enough.
