The East End’s newest bar is riding the non-alcoholic beverage wave and giving teetotallers a place to get a sober buzz.
Mocktail and dessert bar Mirra opens on East Terrace
A bar with no booze. It sounds like a 21st century update to the old ocker Slim Dusty song.
But the stockman with the dry dusty throat needn’t worry about going thirsty had he stumbled into East Terrace’s new mocktail and dessert bar, Mirra.
The newly minted venue, at the corner of Grenfell Street and East Terrace has four pages of tasty, non-alcoholic options for those who don’t drink, aren’t drinking at the moment, or who maybe had too many drinks the night before.
Mirra sells spritzes, malts, Mimosas, Espresso Martinis and gins — all made with non-alcoholic spirits from brands such as Lyres and Fluère.
Manager Lili Tsang says there is an increasing thirst for non-alcoholic options, as more people opt for a sober night out.
“Non-alcoholic drinks allow everyone to enjoy and celebrate, from pregnant ladies to those who are limiting alcohol, living an alcohol-free lifestyle or taking part in causes such as Dry July,” Lili tells CityMag.
“Anyone can still head out and not feel like they are missing out on the bar atmosphere.
“It’s also a place where mothers can treat their teenage daughters to a mocktail, and friends can meet up for a quiet drink.”
A great mocktail acts very much like a great cocktail. It’s all about the blending of the acidity, bitterness, saltiness and sweetness to tingle your palate. New here? Sign up to receive the latest happenings from around our city, sent every Thursday afternoon.
At Mirra, they serve an American Malt. The drink includes Lyre’s non-alcoholic malted bourbon, aromatic bitters and infused apple bark smoke.
Similarly, the Chai Espresso Martini uses the label’s non-alcoholic coffee liqueur together with maple syrup, milk and chai.
“Mocktails people love to try are our Green Passionfruit and Blueberry Sour. The Blueberry Sour has a delicious blueberry puree, with pineapple and lime juice – garnished with fresh mint,” Lili says.
“With gin ever so popular, our Green Passionfruit is a hot selection. With non-alcoholic gin, blue Curaçao, passionfruit, lime juice and soda water and garnished ever so perfectly with passionfruit and cucumber.”
Mirra is a poppy venue. A curved light-purple bar anchors the room, which is bathed in a light shade of lavender. Lili says this was chosen for its “relaxation” qualities.
“Mirra is to be a place where people can come to unwind,” she says.
You can get coffee at Mirra, as well as a selection of Mariage Frères teas made in Paris.
“Some of our most popular teas include Queen’s Choice and Earl Grey Imperial,” Lili says.
“Many teas also have additional options where patrons can add rose petals.”
The bar doubles as a dessert spot catering for vegans. The 7’0s favourite chocolate fondue, cupcakes, macaroons and gelato feature on the menu.
“Our cannelés have also been popular,” Lili says. “These are small and delightful French pastries with a soft and tender custard centre and a dark, thick caramelised crust.
“While most customers are females aged between 25-55, we are seeing families bringing in their children for our gelato.
“The kids love seeing the tap that pours non-stop chocolate. It’s so unique and a delight for the eyes as it’s poured over their gelato cups.”
Mirra is located at 40 East Terrace and opens from 11am ’til 9pm on Tuesday to Saturday and 11am ’til 6pm on Sunday.
