Toby’s Estate is back this month with Octobysfest Local Legends. Nominate your fave café to go in the draw for a Seattle holiday.

So, we’re pretty excited to share that Octobysfest Local Legends is back for another year. Run by Toby’s Estate, it’s an opportunity for coffee drinkers to show some love to their local Toby’s barista – the person applying their craft behind the machine, perfecting pour overs and serving up a little sunshine with every cup.

There’s a nice symmetry to the program’s celebration of those who make our cup possible. Toby’s Estate describes itself as ‘big on flavour, big on consistency and big on treating all the people in our world from farmer to barista like family’.

We also love a good founder’s story…

Theirs began in 1997 when Toby Smith, a coffee-loving lawyer, traded his legal career for the world of specialty coffee. Travelling to remote coffee-producing regions, he immersed himself in the communities. Driven by a deep respect for these farmers and a desire to preserve their craft, he transformed his mother’s garage into a mini roastery.

Toby’s Estate ethically source the beans for their specialty coffees, fostering fair and sustainable partnerships with growers in places like Brazil, Myanmar, Costa Rica and Ethiopia. Collaborating directly with producers and farmers, they negotiate prices that consider the challenges the farmers may be facing for each crop. And, while they work with established farms, they also champion the little guys.
