Raising mental health awareness on a local level

Cheeky Grin Coffee and The Fit Space are hosting a range of events and special happenings throughout October in support of Mental Health Awareness Month.

  • This article was produced in collaboration with Cheeky Grin Coffee.

Community is an important aspect of Cheeky Grin Coffee, according to the Firle coffee shop’s owner and founder, Stefan Iannace.

This not only means greeting his customers with a smile and warm conversation, but also giving back to the community that has helped make his business a success.

Throughout Mental Health Month this October, Cheeky Grin Coffee is  working to provide support for people living with mental health issues at a local level.

“Everyone generally has something behind them, so we are trying to use our platform to make more people aware of how mental health can impact people,” Stefan says.

Cheeky Grin Coffee puts significant emphasis on fostering relationships with regulars. The business has become well known for supporting and collaborating with local businesses.

A regular collaborator is nearby gym The Fit Space, which hosts a weekly run club called Cheeky Trot in collaboration with the coffee shop. Stefan is excited to further the relationship throughout Mental Health Month.

“We quite often do bits and pieces together, like we have a weekly community run that we do together,” Stefan says.

“We bring our communities together over coffee and chats and banter, and we’ve been doing that for just over a year.”

The Fit Space, located on Magill Road, also has community at its heart, and co-owner Charlotte Griffin says she’s keen to use her local platform to spread awareness of mental health issues.

“There are several statewide and nationwide campaigns going on for [Mental Health Awareness Month], and we felt that we needed to do more within the community,” Charlotte says.

Cheeky Grin Coffee and The Fit Space have an extensive calendar of events planned for the local community throughout October.

Starting on Saturday, 1 October, Cheeky Grin Coffee and The Fit Space will run a giveaway through Instagram, featuring prizes such as vouchers and packs from local businesses.

Entering is as simple as liking the giveaway post, leaving a comment tagging a friend, and following both Cheeky Grin Coffee and The Fit Space. Winners will be announced in late October.

Cheeky Grin Coffee will also introduce ‘pay it forward’ cards so customers can shout a coffee for someone less fortunate than themselves.

The Fit Space will also decorate their space for the occasion, providing prime mirror selfie opportunities to visitors by covering them with inspiring stickers and quotes.

A number of events hosted at both Cheeky Grin Coffee and The Fit Space will help raise money for Beyond Blue.

A special themed version of The Cheeky Trot will be held on 8 October, starting at 9am. People are encouraged to dress up in blue and bring a friend for a 3km trot around Firle, before finishing up at Cheeky Grin Coffee — all for a gold coin donation.

Join Ellie from Equilibrium The Holistic Living Project for a 90-minute master class on 15 October at 66-68 Unley Rd, Unley. This masterclass will include education on how people can use modern-day science and ancient yoga practices to be happier and more focussed.

A wellness workshop hosted by Rebecca Weatherill from Workplace Wellbeing will be held on 22 October from 2pm until 4pm at Cheeky Grin Coffee. Entry is free with refreshments provided. Spots are limited, so be sure to book via Eventbrite once the event is officially announced.

Wrapping up the month will be a big community workout held at The Fit Space at 10am on 29 October, giving guests and organisers the chance to pitch in with any last-minute donations.

All proceeds from Cheeky Grin Coffee and The Fit Space’s collaborative events will go towards Beyond Blue, who support people living with mental health issues, focussing on anxiety, depression and suicide prevention.

For more information on Beyond Blue, visit their website, or call them at 1300 22 4636.
