Lazarus Le Cornu rises again

A sense of déjà vu was palpable in the city this week when new plans for the former Le Cornu site in North Adelaide were unveiled. Cartoonist Ross Bateup gives us his take on the land that has seen plenty of conversation, but very little action during its 25 vacant years.

Makris Group – owners of the infamous Le Cornu site in North Adelaide – this week announced their intention to develop the 7,500 square metres of land on O’Connell Street into a precinct that will include a hotel, apartments, offices and retail.

At the price of $200 million, the new plans represent a serious investment but are yet to be assessed by regulatory bodies that have put a handbrake on previous proposals for the site. Makris Group believes it could be more than a year before the go-ahead is received.
