A toast to local venues and artists, the inaugural EVERYDAY FESTIVAL will host 14 gigs across seven venues this weekend.

Every day venues around Adelaide open their doors, prepare their stages and check their mics to host live gigs for music-loving South Aussies.

This weekend, the Independent Live Venues Alliance (ILVA) is hosting EVERYDAY FESTIVAL to appreciate the ‘everyday’ talent of  local bands playing across seven independent grassroots venues.

By branding it as a festival, live music venues in South Australia can show off their usual programming to combat staying a float in a post-COVID entertainment scene.

This joint venture is designed to reinvigorate the venues that have been hit hard, and provide a platform for artists to move the local music ecosystem forward.

The Independent Live Venues Alliance is a collective of live venues including Jive, Grace Emily Hotel and Broadcast Bar in the CBD as well as The Governor Hindmarsh, the Wheatsheaf Hotel, Semaphore Workers Club and Goolwa’s Murray Delta Juke Joint.

The four-day festival will host a range of local talent with a total of 14 gigs spread out across the entire weekend.

Opening the weekend is Strung Out with special guests St Judes at The Gov on Thursday 19 October. Other talent on show include indie-rock band Choosing Sides alongside Normal Behaviour, Violet Harlot and Destinezia at Jive and rock band Fallen Saints at the Semaphore Workers Club.

Choosing Sides vocalist and guitarist Will Wright told CityMag he’s excited for the festival and thinks it’s a big deal because there aren’t a lot of opportunities to celebrate local music.

“Obviously we have a couple of [events] every now and then, but I think more of this stuff where local mini festivals can happen…it would encourage more people,” Will says.

“Venues like Jive are places that gave us opportunities when we were starting off, and I think it’s really important that we have grassroots local venues thriving because if we don’t then those opportunities won’t exist.”

Choosing Sides is playing Friday 20 October together with four-piece Normal Behaviour, punk and progressive rock band Violet Harlot and emerging indie band Destinezia.

“We’ve been wanting to play with those bands for a while,” Will says.

“Violet Harlot and Destinezia are new up-and-coming bands who are killing it at the moment, and their stuff’s really cool and it’s really fresh to hear some new stuff coming out.

“Normal Behaviour are kind of like a reimagined version of Soda, they used to be called Soda, but now I think we’ve [all] got a bunch of new music to share so it’s going to be a lot of new stuff people haven’t heard before.”

It wouldn’t be a festival without a trademark beer so the ILVA, in collaboration with Wheaty Brewing Corps, brewed Czech One, Two – a Bohemian Pilsener available at all ILVA venues throughout the weekend.
