Cult filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things will join more than 130 films on the Adelaide Film Festival lineup after organisers secured two late wish list additions.

Also announced today, Promising Young Woman director Emerald Funnell’s Saltburn is another addition to the AFF lineup and features rising Australian actor Jacob Elordi (Euphoria), Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) and Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman).

As reported by InReview last week, both films were on the wish list for AFF CEO and creative director Mat Kesting who said the movies’ availability could not confirmed before the launch of the program for the October festival.

Kesting also told InReview that he and program director Gail Kovasteff were in conversation to secure Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla – a different perspective on the life led by Elvis’ young wife.

Poor Things is a story about a young woman (Emma Stone) resurrected after a suicide and is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos who was behind arthouse flicks including Dogtooth, The Killing of the Sacred Deer, and The Lobster.

Australian screenwriter Tony McNamara, who partnered with Lanthimos on The Favourite, joins the Greek filmmaker again for Poor Things.

The movie has generated Oscar buzz for lead actress Stone, and AFF will host the Australian premier.

Saltburn premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado and follows Oxford University student Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan) who finds himself drawn into the world of aristocrat Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi) who invites him to his family’s sprawling estate over summer.

“We always promise to bring the very best of international cinema to the Adelaide Film Festival and in 2023 we are delivering again on this commitment,” AFF’s Kesting said.

“The published program is already chock full of cinema delights, but I am absolutely thrilled to be announcing these late additions – both of them excellent treats for festival audiences.”

Poor Things will screen on 19 and 27 October at the Capri Theatre and Saltburn will screen on 25 October at The Piccadilly and on 28 October at the Capri.

The AFF program dropped last week, and includes a slate of more than 130 films from 43 countries including The Royal Hotel starring Julia Garner, Housekeeping for Beginners directed by Macedonian-born Australian director Goran Stolevski, archival tribute to early surf culture You Should Have Been Here Yesterday and Scott Hicks’ The Musical Mind.

The 2023 Adelaide Film Festival runs from October 18-29.
