City bagel guide: East End Providore

At the prospect of another edition of the City bagel guide we found ourselves counting down the minutes until our lunch break. This week, we took a leisurely stroll and found bagels have infiltrated the East End.

Ebenezer Place has to be one of our favourite places for lunch. Between Nano, Hey Jupiter and Parwana it has a strong claim to the title of Adelaide’s premiere lunch street. So, when we heard the ever-growing bagel movement had spread east, we tied our shoelaces tight and headed down there.

Remarks

Visit East End Providore at 24 Ebenezer Place, from Monday to Friday, 8am until 5pm. And Saturdays 9am to 4pm.

We take a right off Rundle, and march down Union Street with considerable pace because we’re hungry. As we round the cobblestone corner onto Ebenezer we slow to take in the strip.

The sun is shining (for a brief moment), and the street is full of beautiful rich red brick façades and trees galore.

We head to East End Providore, the purveyors of fine produce and a range of freshly prepared delicacies, one of which is – you guessed it – bagels.

After perusing the menu, which includes five different bagel options, we decide on a sweet and a savoury.

The first, our entrée, is a soft cinnamon bagel. Sliced in two, it’s toasted and served with two giant quenelles of cream cheese and a shallow dish of raw, local blue gum honey.

It’s minimal and simple, but done well. It takes us a moment before we dig in.

But when we do (ruining the lovely presentation in the process), the bagel is soft, with (as promised) a sweet cinnamon taste. The cream cheese is best spread thickly and drizzled messily with the honey. It’s not so picture perfect once we are done with it, but that’s also because there’s nothing left.

We contemplate ordering another. But we’re reassured by the fact that our ‘main course’ is on the way.

It arrives, and it certainly delivers. It’s what we’ve decided to refer to as the ‘full breakfast bagel’ and comes sandwich-style topped with a fried egg, avocado, crispy pancetta and a sweet tomato chutney.

We love everything about the flavor combo on this one, and the poppy seeds on top add extra zing.

East End Providore source their bagels from Olive & Edith, a regular stallholder at the Marketshed. They are easy to eat and soft in texture. Not too dense or chewy, and therefore don’t result in a jaw ache.

It’s a little disappointing that our little trip to the East End is coming to a close. We quite enjoyed the half hour of escapism. But, sadly it’s back to the office for us. But, we might just take the long way back.
