Style Sample: The quiet city
Direction and words: Sharmonie Cockayne

It’s a weird time to be living and working in Adelaide right now. Many of us are working from home, either by necessity or choice.
The city is much emptier than usual, and those that wander it are less inclined to stop for a chat with strangers or have their picture taken.
Minimising the risk of exposure is a good thing, and Thomas and I very much encourage keeping a distance presently. So, we took Style Sample to some CBD home-workplaces.
Some city dwellers live alone, some live with their families, and others live in co-op communities. What we noticed both at home and on the street is a desire to be wearing what makes us feel good. Each day, we make the effort to dress ourselves in nice things, not because we’re going to be seen, but because we’re inspiring ourselves to keep going.
It just feels good to put on all your costume jewellery, or your brightest, most neon runners, or that gorgeous slinky top you bought in Greece four years ago, or the kind-of-more-expensive-than-you-could-afford t-shirt you bought from a local designer during lockdown because you wanted to support the fashion industry, or your ridiculously cute Balenciaga-inspired fluffy slippers – just to pick up some takeaway on Rundle Street.
Why not? We’ve gotta keep ourselves entertained somehow. It might as well be with fashion.
