Thought leaders will again gather to explore ways to improve Adelaide at Future Forum next month.

Started in 2015 by architect Dino Vrynios in partnership with the South Australian chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects, Future Forum is a platform for discussion around the ways Adelaideans can improve how they live, learn and work.

Encompassing more than just architecture, Future Forum explores the ways in which effective design and design processes can, along with collaborative partnerships with creatives and entrepreneurs, enable South Australians to mould the state in the years ahead.

Dino, who is also an InDaily 40 Under 40 alumnus, hopes that the increasingly popular event will continue to spark tangible change in Adelaide through engaging with a range of audiences.

“We’re trying to bring these conversations to the forefront of people’s minds, but trying to do it in a way that’s not a sector talking to itself, and it actually being deliberately diverse in terms of who’s contributing to the discussion,” he says.

“Through that diversity you’re getting a breadth of contribution, and that thinking ultimately gets you closer to a tangible outcome.”

Its diversity of contributors is key to the success of the Future Forum events, Dino says, with many hands making light work.

“What I’ve found over the years is that if you introduce the right people to a conversation you can make something happen far quicker,” he says.

For example, the last Future Forum event, ProtoCity, explored the idea of transforming Adelaide into a city of producers rather than consumers.

The conversation was led by Ross Harding, founder of Finding Infinity, an organisation dedicated to the fast-tracking of cities’ transition to self-sufficiency through creativity and consultation.

Ross stressed at the forum that this transition was needed sooner rather than later.

Amongst other ideas, the main discussion points of the ProtoCity forum centred on the need for Adelaide to become a leader in innovation, efficiency and commerce.

Future Forum’s next event, happening at Adelaide Town Hall on Wednesday, 10 November, will again push the boundaries of how South Australian’s can live better.

Titled ‘Reset’, the forum will discuss the concept of waste and a circular economy.

“With all these events we do, we try to pick a subject matter and bring a design-thinking lens to it,” Dino says.

“What this event is going to be about is actually looking at the circular economy principles, but having a bigger-picture discussion around ‘What does that mean for Adelaide and South Australia?’”

As the global shift towards sustainability continues, Reset will explore the concept of a more connected global economy and its implications on a twenty-first century Adelaide.

The forum will touch on waste in its many forms – money, time, resources and skills; how Adelaideans are able to reset their ways of thinking; and how a circular economy can help to improve the city.

Jodie Bricout, Circular Economy Manager at Lifecycles, an Adelaide-based consultancy company specialising in life cycle assessment projects, will deliver the keynote presentation at Reset, with a panel of speakers to follow.

The end goal, as always, is improving the way Adelaideans live.

“If we can create an environment that positions us for the future of the economy and the world, it supports the idea of the world coming to Adelaide and doing business, to create new solutions, to prototype,” Dino says.
