We met the Broderick family back in March 2018 during our three-part feature on the making of the much-hyped Basket Range wine locale (distinct from the aforementioned wine label).
“For those who are less familiar, Sholto and his brother Louis are the sons of Phil Broderick, who planted vines in Basket Range back in the 1970s,” says James Hopkins, who co-hosts The Maker & Me with sommelier Tyler Grace Austin.
“The family shifted site once, but again, planted Bordeaux varieties, along with a lot of Pinot Noir. People would’ve thought Phil was a bit odd planting Cabernet Sauvignon in the hills back then, but here we are.
“With time and significant climatic and cultural influences at play, his boys have just released what I think is an integral style in the future of this variety in Australia.
“The boys’ latest is juicy and highly expressive of the fruit itself, without being staunched by high alcohol and heavy oak. Along with this new Cab, Sholto and Louis’ line of latest releases are sure-fire. They’ve only been at it a few years. These are bloody fine wines they’re making now.”
Sholto will be bringing along some new release wines, rare museum stock, and some tried and true favourites, so come thirsty.
“Being raised within the folds of Australia’s most established hub of natural wine, it’s unsurprising they’ve redirected things on the farm and for the better,” James says.
“We’ll be looking at their sharp upwards trajectory, as well as revisiting Phil’s original and very age-worthy Basket Range style, to learn about their origins.
“Next Tuesday’s gonna be all kinds of special.”
