SPECIAL REPORT: COVID-19 ADELAIDE
Note:
Since the publication of this article, the Art Gallery of South Australia has announced it will now reopen on Friday, 5 June.
The Art Gallery of South Australia has today announced it will reopen its doors on 8 June, after closing indefinitely on Wednesday, 25 March due to COVID-19 restrictions.
The closure cut short the showing of the 2020 Adelaide Biennial of Australia Art: Monster Theatres, which was due to close on Monday, 8 June. With the gallery’s reopening, AGSA has also announced the exhibition will be extended until Sunday, 2 August.
“We are delighted to extend the life of the 2020 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art: Monster Theatres,” AGSA Director Rhana Devenport ONZM says.
“Visitors are welcomed back into the arena to experience the re-emerged monsters of our time in this prescient exhibition.”
The South Australian State Government has flagged Monday, 8 June as the date when the second stage of easing restrictions are set to kick in, after a gradual easing of restrictions this week allowed for outdoor dining at restaurants and cafés, regional travel, and the reopening of various community and civic spaces.
From 8 June, up to 20 people at a time will be allowed inside galleries, museums, gyms, cinemas, theatres, dine-in restaurants, tattoo studios and non-therapeutic beauty, nail and massage businesses, provided the spaces allows for one person in every 4sqm.
AGSA has said careful monitoring of their visitors will be necessary throughout this period, but they are still excited to welcome the public back into the institution.
“While attendances will be diligently monitored and the safety guidelines outlined by Government adhered to, we are so pleased to welcome a limited capacity of visitors back into the Gallery, reopening windows to other worlds through art,” Rhana says.
