Thorns Between Roses

Humans and nature have a complex relationship.

We love it and it is good for us, but we will sometimes build large shopping centres around it until it dies.

Remarks

Thorns Between Roses opens from 6pm Thursday, 6 April and runs until Thursday, 20 April at Format, 80 Hindley Street.

As a society, we’re waking up to the myriad benefits nature has for our health and for the liveability of our cities, which hopefully means that in the future, it will be less likely that an Australian prime minister will be reported as saying the timber industry are “the ultimate conservationists”.

Suffice to say, plant life, and our relationship to it, has a lot of depth to explore, and if you happen to prefer visual and conceptual art over linguistic meandering, you should visit Format tonight for Thorns Between Roses.

The exhibition promises to challenge “the hierarchy of plants and the value of a plant’s structure,” and question whether a weed can be as captivating as a peony, or the stem could be considered more beautiful than the flower.

The least we can say is that it’ll be good for your health.
