Just one year in and My Kingdom for a Horse has established itself as a go-to café in Adelaide’s southwestern pocket.

Their meticulously constructed meals and house-roasted coffee has been the right combination at the right time for Adelaide’s brunching masses.

What’s surprising though is that this was never owner Emily Raven’s aim.

“We wanted to do a micro roastery, and I’ve been learning to roast coffee for a while, and I was looking for an angle to come back into the hospitality industry that was interesting for me,” Emily says.

“I initially wanted to do just that, but … I was unsure whether people would accept just the coffee aspect of it.

“However, when we opened the café… it was something that people wanted, and we had to surf the wave with that.”

With this initial success, Emily was able to plunge into her newfound passion for coffee roasting, while at the same time exercise her expertise – running a professional kitchen – but her larger vision for the coffee side of the business was put on hold.

The time has come now, though, for My Kingdom to expand, and what this means for fans of the café, is roasted beans direct to your door.

Emily will be launching a fortnightly subscription service for the growing number of coffee addicts with home kits, wanting to recreate the café experience in their own home.

“So people [can] buy a subscription, their account will be debited monthly, and coffee will be dispatched every two weeks… we can grind it for them if they need that, and we’ll also sell gear online,” Emily says.
