Filmmaker Jared Nicholson has spent the last 18 months documenting what the city has lost since demolishing its only central skate park.

It’s not about BMX bikes, skateboards, scooters and rollerblades. It’s not about reckless youth and lawless behaviour – though some of that may feature.

Jared Nicholson’s documentary, More Than Concrete, is about “creativity put into action” and the true cost of what Adelaide’s lost since demolishing the city’s only skatepark in 2015.

In the second of our long form pieces, CityMag will publish Jared’s film alongside an essay taking in the full scope of skate and BMX culture around the world – the economic impact of the multi-billion dollar industry, its rising legitimacy as art and its anthropological value to human society from Kabul to Barcelona.
