The Little Munchies opens on Grange Road

The previous owner of Cantina61 brings Indian-style sandos and brunch classics to Grange Road.

When Kunal Nakrani owned Cantina61 down south in Seaford Rise, the long commute would often get him down considering he lived in in the western suburbs in Grange.

One day, he was “passing by” and saw a space for rent on Grange Road. He thought it would be the perfect opportunity to start up a new business.

“There were no other coffee shops once you leave Grange over there and all the way to the [Findon] shopping centre,” Kunal says.

“Then when people want to go in the shopping centre – if they stop by – it’s in and out for them to grab a coffee. So this is quick – they stop, grab a coffee and go.”

What also attracted Kunal to this venue was the accessible car park and “lots of small offices and businesses around”.

The Little Munchies focuses on brunch, with menu items ranging from eggs benedict, chilli scrambled eggs, cauliflower steak to pancakes. There’s a cabinet full of different “grab and go” options catered for the surrounding locals businesses and their need for a quick bite to eat.

“During lunch, I start to see we get four, five, 10, people coming in quickly, they don’t have time, so [the benefit is] once it’s ready, just heat up, toast it and then send it,” Kunal says.

“Whereas if it’s dine in, they want different food offerings as well it’s a [different] price margin because we don’t charge too much.

“But when it’s fresh, there’s more fresh ingredients, which costs some time for regular people, a bit more [especially] if they’re coming every day.”

The most anticipated menu item is the Indian style sandwiches with fillings like tandoori paneer, which is a cheese that “is like halloumi but not salty”, and a samosa toasty.

Kunal says he doesn’t “think anybody in Adelaide has done this yet”.

“It depends as well, because it’s a different cooking pattern,” he says. “You have to follow spices. You have to have more spices and balance flavouring in Indian toasties and everything.”

In late November, Kunal plans to open the space later for dessert, including menu items like sponge cake and pancakes.

“I just wanted to try something different, you know?” Kunal says.

“Because what everybody is missing is a dessert area. I know there are couple of big companies’ San Churro [and St. Louis], but ours will be different.

“You come here, sit down have a different option, rather than having just a few options.”

What’s set to hit the dessert menu are waffles with “different types of toppings”, pancakes and sponge cake.

The Little Munchies want a “different experience” and will also offer Gelato Bello ice cream available all day, where patrons can “pick up their own choice of ice cream from a cabinet with the cake or pancake”.

“I’ve tried a couple of different [gelato options] but sometimes I find they’re little bit watery, or some different texture or something,” Kunal says.

“They do not have anybody in this area that uses it, so there’s different ice cream flavour’s available. I haven’t seen any Gelato Bello in western suburb yet so far.

“I’ll give a new vendor a try.”

BLK MRKT Coffee

 

Kunal purposefully chose to use Adelaide-based BLK MRKT Coffee because it’s “one of the darkest roasts at the moment.”

“I’ve heard a thing saying that if you’ve got a smooth coffee, and if somebody wants strong, you can’t make a stronger coffee. It doesn’t taste strong at all,” Kunal says.

“But when you’ve got a strong coffee, you can make a weak coffee from there and then we’re taking suggestions from locals as we go as well.”

The Little Munchies is located at 405A Grange Road, Seaton and is open from Monday to Friday from 6:30am until 3pm, then Saturday and Sunday from 7:45am until 1:30pm.
