Based on the novel by Sir Walter Scott, the story of fragile Lucia takes place in the Scottish Highlands. Caught between love and loyalty, she is tricked by her brother into marrying a wealthy man, though her heart belongs to her family’s sworn enemy. Pushed to the limit, Lucia is driven to insanity and enacts her revenge in one of the most famous ‘mad scenes’ of the opera repertoire.
Acclaimed Spanish Conductor Lucía Marín leads the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and a thrilling cast including soprano Emma Pearson, baritone Morgan Pearse, and for the first time in Australia, Indian American tenor Alok Kumar, a frequent performer at great opera houses around the world including The Met. Director Laura Hansford breaths new life into the revered John Copley production often defined as “a piece of Australian operatic history”.
Donizetti’s iconic bel canto masterpiece has all the ingredients for the quintessential tragic opera: feuding families, ill-fated lovers, betrayal and murder. Add stratospheric vocal highs, sprawling sets and lavish costumes… you’d be mad to miss it.
