A free party in the Adelaide park lands will kick off a series of nine events presented by nightclub Sugar and the new audio arm of local promoters Inside Out over spring and into summer.

Remarks

Sugar Park Pres 01 – Launch Party
26 October, 2024
4pm-11pm
Venue: TBA (Adelaide parklands)
Featuring: Dolce (SYD), Venda (SYD), DJ Ivy (ADL) & Lenin (ADL)

The opening event – featuring Sydney DJs Dolce and Venda and locals Ivy and Lenin – also acts as the unveiling of Inside Out Audio’s new Funkion-One speaker system, imported from England.

It’s the first of nine parties in the Sugar Park Pres series, which are being presented in collaboration with other local promoters like Small City Systems, Happy Station, Yax Programs and more which are showcasing local, interstate and international talent.

For Inside Out Audio’s Lenin Paunovic, who has been throwing parties under the Inside out Dance Club name in Adelaide since 2017, the series is a chance to showcase the new Funktion-One speakers.

“We needed these outdoor events to happen to really let people see what we’re trying to do, so we just decided we should do that ourselves,” Paunovic says.

Funktion-One has attained cult status in the dance music world for its series of loudspeakers that work just as well outside as they do in the club.

The brand was created by British speaker makers Tony Andrews and John Newsham in the 90s when electronic dance music took over massive warehouses, outdoor spaces, and nightclubs.

Inside Out Audio’s imported system will be available for hire after the series of Sugar Park Pres parties.

Paunovic says he’s excited about the interstate and international acts on the lineup, but is also keen to kick back and enjoy the music and sunshine.

“There’s nothing better than being at a dance party with your mates when you’re looking around and you can see the happiness on everyone else’s faces,” he says.

“It’s the reason why we do it, that’s the main goal.”

The first party will be free and is hosted by Inside Out Dance Club which is also throwing two other park lands parties on 30 November and 21 December featuring E. Lina from Ukraine and Bruno Schmidt from the UK respectively.

Other highlights include Small City System’s 14 December party with locals Club Sandwich and Pierre Honey, as well as Material World Programs’ all-local 11 January lineup of Jazzy J, Felicity, Prince Aaronak and Mel Lake.

Sugar and Happy Systems’ event on 28 December brings a stacked lineup of internationals to the parklands including Scott Grooves (USA), Chez Damier (USA), Alton Miller (USA) and Vlada (Russia/Germany). The club’s creator Driller will also make an appearance, as well as Adelaide’s Fin Le Guin and Melbourne’s Hannah D.

Not all the parties will be free, but Paunovic says he hopes Adelaide will get around both the no-cost parties and the ones with a fee attached,  after a winter in which he noticed attendance has been down across clubs in Adelaide.

“Generally speaking winters are always tough, they’re always harder, but it’s probably more notable this year than it has been in quite some time,” he says.

“You can often blame the weather, but I think the cost of living is getting people down. It’s harder for me and I can speak for a lot of my friends as well: you have to pick and choose what you really want to go to as opposed to going out all the time.

“By putting the events on for free, especially through the season where more people are more likely to come out, hopefully the combination of that can help overall attendance and build something greater.”
