The Gilbert Hotel turns 170

With a special birthday beer by Pirate Life, the once-in-170-year celebration promises to be nothing short of exuberant.

Established in 1848, The Gilbert St Hotel has had many names over the years. Known as the Shoemakers Arms, Crown and Sceptre and Bells Inn, The Gilbert St Hotel is a classic Adelaide pub and anchor of the southwest corner. It’s stood the test of time and embraced craft beer in a good way and has been Pirate Life’s unofficial basecamp in the CBD for many years.

Known for its food, the pub’s reputation for craft beer and live music has been steadily built upon year-on-year by publican and manager, Luke Saturno.

“It’s a destination pub – we keep building on craft beer, a lot of punters come for the beer,” says Luke. “With any business you have to keep changing and evolving – you can get a Superdry and a chicken parmy at any pub in the suburbs. We’re happy to sell Peroni as well if that’s what people want, but the craft beer is there if people want something different.”

Get down to this very local event and enjoy the southwestern hospitality.
