SPECIAL REPORT: COVID-19 ADELAIDE

The week started with relative calm in South Australia – major events were cancelling or postponing over the weekend, but smaller gatherings of people seemed safe from sweeping restrictions on collective movement.

By mid-week, as advice from the government developed, it became clear that businesses across the city, the state and the country would need to adapt to the growing sense of public unease caused by COVID-19.

CityMag has always had strong ties with Adelaide’s hospitality industry – it forms a large part of our coverage, and we count many of the small businesses owners we speak to as friends. We imagine that a large portion of our audience feels the same way.

Through InDaily‘s reporting yesterday, we saw several restaurants and cafés now pivot to offering takeaway-oriented menus and service, and the teams at Nido and Osteria Oggi have even begun selling uncooked pasta and sauce for people to prepare for themselves at home.

Sadly, we’ve seen at least three businesses opt to close: The Gatsby Lounge, Big Window, and the Crippen Place collective of Rocket, Mr Kim’s and Electric Circus. The Grace Emily, a stalwart CBD pub, is keeping its front bar open, but all gigs have been cancelled for the foreseeable future.

It’s hard to know exactly how to help.

We have always encouraged spending time and money with local businesses, but not everyone feels comfortable doing so right now.

If you have decided to take measures to self-isolate and are avoiding non-essential exposure to the public, there is still a way to support the businesses that mean the most to you.
