With its newly redesigned streetscape, King William Road in Hyde Park is the perfect escape from the CBD, as it seamlessly melds high-end fashion with top-quality dining under shady eaves full of heritage character.
Rediscover King William Road five minutes from the city
If it weren’t for Peacock Road, King William’s name would run straight from Hyde Park into the heart of our city. The small strip of bitumen between the two is hardly a barrier though, and on a sunny day it’s a pleasant bike ride or drive from the city to visit the new King William Road.
The first sign of change we note are the zebra crossings. Two men sit on a bench outside the barber enjoying the late afternoon sun. This is a place you want to linger in.
Terrazo paving tiles, rounded curbs and multiple glasses of prosecco perched on outside tables gives the street a distinctly European sensibility.
Details like the red ribbon across the public rubbish bins and the sandstone gravel in the verge garden beds frame little vignettes and help us discover shops we wouldn’t have seen otherwise.
Fon Salon is busy getting customers ready for the weekend, as are myriad other beauty and spa-like businesses along the strip. They all contribute to making this road feel more like a neighourhood than a thoroughfare – not to mention the giant St Bernard (named Hudson) who’s keen on a pat.
Less than a five-minute drive from the centre of town, this buzzy spot is filling up with diners, all happy they’ve arrived at their destination and not still in their car. The scene here is serene.
