Summer means salad: Oporto offers up its first bunless burger range

It’s been a long time coming but with the official switch of seasons this week, we can finally order a salads without being asked if we are watching our waistlines.

The weather is warming up, the beach is beckoning, and restrictions are gradually easing, so there’s every reason to enjoy summer this year.

As we shed the winter layers for summer sleekness, the masterminds behind the South Australia’s 13 Oporto outlets are also basking in the warm weather and shedding some carbs from their burgers.

The chain has released a “bunless burger” range – the perfect addition to your lunch break spent in the dappled sunlight of the park.

But this is so much more than a burger. So much. Oporto insists while a “bunless burger” is technically a salad this is “not just any salad”.

It’s something of a change for the franchise, which opened its first store in 1986 in North Bondi.

Oporto has created everything you love about their burgers, but packaged it in a convenient and healthy format. Or, in the business’ own words: “Oporto big flavour. All without the bun”.

While others within the fast food industry may have spent precious time and resources developing low-carb alternatives to burger buns, Oporto has delivered the premier option to the public on a silver platter (or in a cardboard bowl, as the case may be).

The four menu options including an array of ingredients, including RSPCA-approved chicken, marinated feta, crisp lettuce, mandarin, avocado and a “zesty” Green Goddess dressing fit for a figure of Greek mythology.

The Chicken and Fetta salad option – for the “premium health conscious” – includes grilled chicken tenders, lettuce, chickpeas, feta and mandarin.

The Vegan Salad option includes a pea and herb patty, mixed lettuce, slaw, Portuguese tomato salad, guacamole and the Green Goddess dressing.

But never fear Oporto devotees – the original inspirations for the bunless range are still on the menu.

The Pulled Chicken Bowl and the Chicken Salad, which include the tasty grilled chicken tenders, have also been given new life.

All the Oporto options are available to order online to either have delivered or for pick-up in-store. If you’re picking your order up from an OTR Oporto store, pre-order using the OTR App to save time.

If you, like us, are salivating at the thought of all of these bunless burgers, we have some good news for you.

CityMag and Oporto SA have teamed up to offer 10 readers an Oporto Bunless Burger voucher so they can enjoy the new range. To be in the running all you need to do is follow @citymagadl and @oporto_sa on Instagram, like the Instagram post and tag a friend.
